Jordan Blue, a mechanic struggling to survive from day to day, barely survives a potentially fatal accident, rescued by the enigmatic Cosmari space mermaid, Kuvett. Secretive and clandestine, the Cosmari desire to reclaim Shoar, one way or another.
While Jordan attempts to process their chance meeting, Kuvett sees the mysteries of the closed off Meritopolis, a massive and towering symbol of X-TRACT’s control over the planet, unaware of the tensions brewing underneath the surface between the Citizens of Meritopolis and the populace of the decrepit Outskirts, where the remaining population of Shoar live.
From the Depths of the Stars is an ambitious start to the Codex of the Cosmari series, introducing readers to a fascinating world. Shoar is anything but a peaceful futuristic paradise. Its resources have made it enormously valuable, but the cost of that value has been paid by the planet and its people.
Jordan Blue makes for an engaging central character because their story begins from such a personal place. They're not introduced as someone with all the answers or unlimited power, they're a mechanic trying to survive.
The novel's depiction of the divide between Meritopolis and the Outskirts is particularly effective.
Clark also brings an imaginative queer perspective to the science-fiction genre, combining representation with an unusual setting and a storyline filled with mystery.
C.D. Clark, when not perpetually stuck in mentally rewriting earlier works, takes care of his cat, Ninja as they both struggle just to make it.
