For the first time since leaving Europe three years earlier his has a sense of home. He finds customers in the neighboring Cherokee and travelers. More importantly he finds friends. Unknown to Levi is the whereabouts of the outlaw Kirby. Can Levi rely on his new friends and community? Will Levi be able to hold on to what he has built and face the man who thinks nothing except for the destruction of Levi and all he holds dear?
Call in the Dogs is a solid Western that mixes action with a more personal story about starting over. Levi is trying to move on from his past and build something stable, but when an old enemy resurfaces, everything is put at risk. The setup is familiar, but it’s handled in a way that keeps you interested.
One of the best parts of the book is how it shows Levi’s connection to the people around him. His friendships and the sense of community give the story more weight.
A strong sense of detail is put on the history and the culture of the Native Americans around him.
There’s also a nice balance between character moments and the build-up. It's a satisfying read overall.
